Privacy, in plain words.

BeWise is built to collect as little as possible. This policy explains exactly what the app stores, why, and how you can have it deleted.

Who we are

BeWise (the iOS and Android app and the website bewise.love) is operated by Digital Shift OÜ, a company registered in Estonia and the team behind Capgo. Digital Shift OÜ is the data controller for the information described below. You can reach us at any time at hello@capgo.app.

What the app stores

An anonymous device ID

The first time you open BeWise, the app generates a random identifier on your device (a UUID such as 3f2a9c1e-…). It is not derived from your hardware, your Apple or Google account, or any advertising identifier, and it is not linked to your name, email or contacts. It is stored on your device and sent to our API so we can:

  • remember which quotes you have loved, so the count is accurate and you can only vote once per quote;
  • remember your preferences: your theme, your language, your platform (iOS or Android) and the app version you run;
  • serve the right quote to your iOS Shortcut, where this same ID acts as your personal API key.

Data stored only on your device

Your reminder time, cached quotes and other settings stay in the app’s local storage on your phone. Daily reminders are local notifications scheduled by your device. We do not use push notification services and never receive a push token.

What we never collect

  • No name, email address, phone number or account of any kind.
  • No location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone access.
  • No advertising identifiers (IDFA or Android Advertising ID).
  • No analytics, crash-reporting, attribution or advertising SDKs.
  • No cross-app or cross-site tracking, and no data sold or shared for advertising.

Where the data lives

The BeWise API runs on Cloudflare Workers, and the data above is stored in a Cloudflare D1 database located in the European Union. Cloudflare acts as our processor. To deliver and protect the service, Cloudflare processes technical request data such as IP addresses; we do not store IP addresses alongside your device ID, and short-lived operational logs are deleted automatically within days.

Other services the app talks to

  • Unsplash serves the background photographs. Your device downloads images directly from images.unsplash.com, which means Unsplash receives a standard web request (including your IP address). See the Unsplash privacy policy.
  • Capgo live updates, operated by Digital Shift OÜ, deliver app updates without a store release. To check for an update, the app sends its app ID, current version, platform, OS version and a random installation ID created by the update plugin. This is used only to deliver the right update and to measure update success.
  • Apple and Google provide the App Store, Google Play, the system share sheet and the native “rate this app” prompt. Those interactions are covered by their own privacy policies; we receive no personal data from them.

This website

bewise.love uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts. The home page fetches today’s quote from api.bewise.love and loads photos from Unsplash. The site is served by Cloudflare.

Why we process it

We process the anonymous device ID and your preferences on the basis of our legitimate interest in running the app you chose to use (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR): counting votes fairly, remembering your settings and powering your Shortcut. We keep this data for as long as you use the app, or until you ask us to delete it.

Your rights and deleting your data

Because we cannot identify you, the simplest way to remove your data is to delete the app: the ID and all local data are erased from your device. To also erase the server-side record, email hello@capgo.app with the personal API key shown in Settings → Personal API key. We will delete the record, your preferences and your votes within 30 days and confirm by email.

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your data, and to data portability. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, such as the Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate (Andmekaitse Inspektsioon) or the authority in your country.

Children

BeWise is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone. Since the app requires no account and collects no identifying information, it can be used safely by students and younger readers.

Changes to this policy

If we change how BeWise handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top. The full history of this page is public in our GitHub repository.
