iOS Shortcut
Your daily quote, on the lock screen.
BeWise gives every device a personal API key. Plug it into an iOS Shortcut and today’s quote, in your theme and language, can appear on your lock screen, in Siri or in a widget.
Endpoint
GET https://api.bewise.love/v1/users/{key}/today
Replace {key} with the personal API key from Settings. No headers, no
authentication, JSON response.
-
Copy your personal API key
Open BeWise, go to Settings and tap Personal API key. It is copied to your clipboard. Open the app once while online so your key and preferences are saved.
-
Create a new Shortcut
Open the Shortcuts app, tap +, and add the action Get Contents of URL. Paste the endpoint above and replace
{key}with your key. -
Pick out the quote
Add Get Dictionary Value twice: one for the key
text, one forauthor. Shortcuts reads the JSON response automatically. -
Show it
Add Show Notification (or Show Result, or Speak Text for Siri) with the text, a dash and the author. Name the Shortcut “BeWise”.
-
Put it on your lock screen
In the Automation tab, create a Time of Day automation, set it to run daily at your chosen time, choose Run Immediately, and select your BeWise Shortcut. Each morning, the quote lands on your lock screen as a notification.
What you get back
The endpoint answers with today’s quote for your theme and language:
{
"id": "…",
"category": "inspire",
"lang": "en",
"date": "2026-10-07",
"text": "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.",
"author": "William James",
"img": "https://images.unsplash.com/photo-…",
"tags": ["action"],
"votes": 128,
"voted": false
}
textandauthorare all you need for a notification.imgis the photo behind the quote. Use Get Contents of URL on it to show the image too.- Changing the theme or language in the app changes what your Shortcut receives. No need to edit the Shortcut.
-
Add
?date=YYYY-MM-DDto fetch yesterday’s or tomorrow’s quote (one day either side of today, UTC). Handy when your local date differs from UTC.
Troubleshooting
- “user not found”: open BeWise once with an internet connection so your key is registered, then try again.
- “invalid id”: the key was pasted incompletely. Copy it again from Settings.
- Don’t share your key publicly. It only reveals your theme and language, but it is yours.
For developers
There is also a public endpoint that needs no key:
GET https://api.bewise.love/v1/quotes/today?category=inspire&lang=en. It is CORS-enabled, so you can call it from any web page. The API is
open source in the BeWise repository.
